Sage and hot flashes: what the research says
Sage (Salvia officinalis) has traditionally been used for menopausal sweating and hot flashes. Small clinical studies of sage preparations have reported promising results. The studies below tested tablets or extracts, not specific sage leaf tea.
- 2011 clinical study: An open-label, eight-week study recruited 71 menopausal women to take a daily fresh-sage tablet. The intensity-rated hot-flash score fell by 64% at eight weeks in the intent-to-treat group. Because there was no placebo control, the study cannot establish how much improvement was due to sage. Read the study: First time proof of sage's tolerability and efficacy in menopausal women with hot flushes (PubMed, PMID 21630133).
- 2021 randomized, placebo-controlled study: Eighty menopausal women received a specific fresh-sage extract tablet or placebo for four weeks. Researchers reported improvements in menopausal symptoms and hot-flash severity scores with the extract. These findings apply to the tested preparation, not automatically to sage tea. Safety considerations
NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that sage is likely safe in amounts commonly found in foods, but common sage contains thujone, which can be toxic in large amounts.
High-dose or long-term use may be unsafe. Sage may be unsafe during pregnancy, and little is known about its safety while breastfeeding. Consult your health care provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, take medication, or are considering sage for menopausal symptoms. Read NCCIH's sage safety information.
